La Playa Azul Café has been in business since 1976. The foundation of our recipes was created long ago by my grandmother, Beatrice Rodriguez, and is considered early California/Sonora-style Mexican cuisine. Our red chile sauce is made from scratch using whole dried chiles, just as women in Mexico have done for centuries. Our chile rellenos are as light as a soufflé, and the beans we serve are the delicious pink beans my grandmother used.
Over the years, my husband and I have created dishes of our own from our travels to coastal cities in Mexico. Our visit to Zihuatanejo, Mexico, inspired my husband to create two of our signature seafood dishes: Callo De Acha and Pescado En Salsa Verde. It gives us great pleasure to know that the food we serve is of the freshest and highest quality, such as Wild White Mexican shrimp, halibut, and Mary’s chicken, to name a few.
Our Happy Hour won “Best Happy Hour for 2022 & 2023” in the Santa Barbara Independent publication, as well as “Runner-Up for Best Margarita for 2022 & 2023.” Please join us for Happy Hour on our lovely heated patio from 3 pm to 6 pm, Tuesday through Sunday.
La Playa Azul is very grateful to the community of Santa Barbara and the many visitors from all over the world who have supported us over the years.
With God’s blessings, we shall continue to serve you for many more years to come.
One of S.B.'s remaining classics!! Same as it always has been, only keeps upgrading. Clean, fresh, inside or outdoors, with a friendly and fun staff always to please! Best Preminium Margarita around, they know how to make them right! Appetizers during Happy Hour are so reasonable, (Tues-Sun. 3-6!) very filling and delicious. Recommend the Rajas Con Queso, (add Halibut or Shrimp for $4~!) or Chicken Quesadilla with veggies.......Fresh delicious Salsa and guacamole as well! On a sunny day, nothing is better than their famous patio, and keep those Margs coming! 🙂
Best Mexican in Santa Barbra.
It's been there for 49 years.
That's a testament to it's food and loyal customers.
First time my husband and I eat here. Came for the 1st Annual Rose Garden Tattoo Expo and we were craving some Mexican food. This is not Mexican American food. This is good authentic Mexican food. If you're ever in the Santa Barbara area try the Fajitas. Good location and definitely good food.
